New research suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
